Roy’s Ramblings 4/15/10

Internet connection
A recent book observes that in American there is a “breakdown of the consensus that the pursuit of knowledge is good.” The author goes on to say: “[America] decides that because there are two sides to every question, they both must be right, or at least not wrong.”
Now that’s a scary thought isn’t it, and I’m sorry to say it, but I suspect that the author is right. With the rise of the internet and twenty-four hour news, we are bombarded with information, but not necessarily with knowledge. Any fool can create a blog on the internet and pass off their opinion (informed or uninformed) as information, and despite the amount of time given to the news
hardly any of it gives any analysis beyond the ten-second sound byte. We have information, but little knowledge.
I also fear that much the same can be said on the religious scene. Preachers on television and in pulpits are free to say just about anything that they want about scripture, because generally, congregations know so little about it. I could, for example, tell you that Genesis proves that dinosaurs were around at the same time as Adam and Eve. Indeed, there is a museum in Kentucky that says exactly that. But would you know whether that is true or not?
We increasingly depend upon others to tell us what to think and what to believe, because we simply don’t take the time to find out what is true; what is known. I encourage you therefore to read and study all that you can. Recognize that not all opinions are equal; that some are right and some are wrong. Question the source of your information; does it have an agenda, does it sound
true? Use the God-given brain that you are blessed with, and become as knowledgeable as possible.
The Church, at its best, has always believed that knowledge was a gift given to us by God. That is why most science, music, architecture, history and philosophy have come from the Church. Gain knowledge of all of God’s Creation; it is your right.

I’ll see you in church - Roy

Riverside District Elementary Camp
Camp Wrightwood

THEME: The Senses of God

Come experience God with all 5 senses! We’ll explore how we see, hear, taste, smell and feel God among us. Using centers, we’ll sense how God is in each of us. How do we share that so that everyone can sense God in us? In 1John 4:11-12 it states: Dear friends, since Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. Let us share in sensing God with us throughout the week in all we do.

DEANS: Amy Bahnson and Denise Cundari
COST: $295

Is Jesus in your top 8? Do you follow Jesus’ twitter? Today, “friendship” is just a click away. But Jesus wants us to come to him face to face; He wants us to dig deeper. So, grab your Bible and join us at Junior High Camp. John 1:14 says: And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. Together we will dig deeper into the life of Christ.

THEME: Mix Tape: Every life has a soundtrack

Our own personal soundtrack can play an important role in how we get through our days. Do you have a playlist on your iPod that you always play on a perfect day? Has anyone ever made you a CD with new songs or one you’d love to share with someone special? A mix CD, or a mix tape, can be a pain staking labor of love. Each song is selected for a perfect playlist that brings joy. Zepheniah 3:17 says: For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. During our week, we’ll explore the songs that God is hoping we’ll hear as we go through an awesome playlist of who God is and how God feels about us and what’s going on in our lives. Please note that we’re relocating this summer to Camp Wrightwood. It is sure to be an exciting week!
