Roy’s Ramblings 03/2010

istock_000009657546xsmallYou perhaps have seen her doing things around the church, but you’ve never actually noticed her doing things around the church. (Do you get the difference?) I am speaking about Martha, who pulls weeds during the week or on Sundays after church, helps in Kids Church without really being asked, or just picks up some trash if she sees it laying on the ground. She just does things,
without recognition or applause. Martha is one of the unnamed saints that the church depends upon, but seldom notices.

How often in our church, indeed in our lives, we fail to notice the little things that people do for us. They are all around us, all of the time, just making life easier for us without pay or recognition. They do it because they like being helpful, and because there is something in them that says that this is what people are supposed to do for each other. They make the coffee, because it is all gone and someone might like a cup. They stop to help someone on the side of the road who looks like they need help. They hold open a door for someone in a wheelchair or for someone using a walker. Just little things, that makes someone else’s life a little easier.

So, to all of those who do the little things; to Martha; to the person who called me and said “Martha does all of these things and is never thanked”…thank you. May we all learn to follow your example.

See you in church. - Roy
